Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan – A Sunday of Heritage, Hope, and Bagpipes

  • First Congregational Church of Bakersfield-UCC 5 Real Road Bakersfield, CA, 93309 United States (map)

This Sunday, join us for one of our most beloved and stirring services of the year—Kirkin’ o’ the Tartan, a colorful celebration of heritage, remembrance, and community.

With the stirring sound of a live bagpipe played by Travis Combs and the colorful procession of tartans, we’ll honor the legacy of those who came before us and reflect on the deep roots of faith, freedom, and family. Whether you’ve got Scottish ancestry or simply appreciate a moving, meaningful moment of tradition, you are welcome here.

The service will include:

  • A bagpipe procession and recessional by Travis Combs

  • The blessing of the clans and family heirlooms

  • “Flowers of the Forest” remembrance

  • Holy Communion

  • Hymns, storytelling, and shared prayers

  • A message titled “Gone Fishing, Feeding, Tending, & Clothing”

Wear your family tartan or bring a photo or keepsake for the dedication.
You don’t have to be Scottish to take part—all are invited to bring something that represents your roots.

Come for the pipes, stay for the presence of God in sacred community.
We’d love to see you there.
