Advent is the season of preparing ourselves for the coming of Christmas, and the gifts the Christ child brings. For the four Sundays before Christmas, we remind ourselves of these gifts by lighting a candle.

This first Sunday, we will light the candle of hope for Christ is hope in our world.

On the second Sunday, we will light the candle of love for God not only loves us but teaches us to love others.

On the third Sunday, we will light the candle of joy, for the joy true faith brings.

On the fourth Sunday, we will light the candle of peace, for lives filled with God's love and joy are also filled with God's peace.

On Christmas, we light the fifth candle, called the Christ candle, for it is the birth of this special child that enables us to receive the gifts of hope, love, joy, and peace.
